Sudye Cauthen, North Florida Center for Documentary Studies, White Springs

Southern Comforts: Rooted in a Florida Place

What is “sense of place”? How does it shape who we are? Cauthen, a fifth-generation Floridian, explores the tensions between community and the environment. Sharing personal stories, she reflects on all that has changed as Florida’s landscapes and traditions are replaced by interstates, condos, shopping malls, and the new way of life they represent.

Sudye Cauthen is founder of the North Florida Center for Documentary Studies. She also directed Florida’s first Folk-Arts-in-the-Schools program, and her awards include a state of Florida Individual Artist Fellowship in Literature. Her work has appeared in such publications as the Chattahoochee Review, the Florida Review, International Quarterly, and Kalliope. Her latest book is Southern Comforts: Rooted in a Florida Place (University of Georgia Press, 2007).
