DISCOVERING THE FLORIDA SCRUB: 5:00
Each year, scientists from around the world come to Central Florida to study a habitat that's sometimes called "Florida's desert." It's one of our country's most distinctive natural areas, with plants and animals found nowhere else on Earth. Bill Dudley interviews an artist whose experiences in this place have led her to rethink her perspective on the beauty of natural Florida.
In 2006 over a dozen humanities organizations around the state joined to sponsor the Florida Book Awards. In March of this year the second set of awards was presented, and Bill Dudley talked to a Tampa-based writer who is the winner of the 2007 gold medal for Fiction.
The site of only one major land battle, Florida is not seen today as a major player in the War Between the States. Nevertheless, conflicts raged throughout the state between loyal Confederate citizens and Union troops blockading the coast and occupying many of the cities. Bill Dudley listens as a group of storytellers reenact the war as seen through the eyes of some North Floridians.
The southernmost city in continental US, Key West has had a long and colorful history. In the 19th century its industries included cigar rolling, sponge diving, and even salvaging wrecked ships. Bill Dudley tells the strange story of a science-fiction writer who visited Key West in the 1920s to forecast the island's metamorphosis into the tourist destination it is today.
