Volusia County Bar Association, Daytona Beach. This project collects oral histories from attorneys who have practiced law in Volusia County and presents two public forums to bring the histories to public. $2000 Kingsley Plantation, Jacksonville. This grant funds the 2003 Kingsley Heritage program focusing on traditional Medicine and Healing. $1850 Northeast Black History Committee, Mount Dora. A photographic exhibition created and displayed in conjunction with the installation of a historic marker at the Milner-Rosenwald Academy will be funded by this grant. $2000 Maitland Historical Society, Maitland. Funds from this grant will be used to create and develop a 30-minute performance highlighting the historical significance of the life and contributions of Carl H. Galloway, founder of the independent Winter Park Telephone Company in 1910. $2000 Pioneer Settlement for the Creative Arts, Barberville. This grant funds the creation of a Timucuan village at the Barberville Pioneer Settlement in order to contrast it with an existing Seminole Village. $2000 Apalachee Blues Society, Tallahassee This grant funds a free program at the beginning of the 2004 weekend blues festival featuring music and information about blues traditions. $2000 Fort Myers Beach Cultural Museum & Environmental Learning Center, Fort Myers Beach. This grant funds the research, development, and production of a brochure with a map and information about the 2000-year history of the Mound House. $2000 Coconut Grove Playhouse, Miami. A post-production inter-faith panel discussion following a matinee performance of "The Chosen" will address the similarities and differences among and within various religions. $2000 Loxahatchee River Historical Society, Jupiter. A series of programs will focus on Marjorie Stoneman Douglass and her legacy in Florida. $2000 Apopka Historical Society, Apopka. The Apopka Historical Society will create an exhibit and program featuring the life stories of pioneers of the community. $2000 Laura (Riding) Jackson Home Preservation Foundation, Vero Beach. An oral history project in the communities of Wabasso and Gifford will help to bring to light the stories of early settlers. $2000 The African-American Heritage Society, Pensacola. This project features a production of "Our Voices Are Many" to honor and celebrate W.E.B. Dubois influence. $2000.00 Tennessee Williams Society in Key West, Key West. The project funds New York Times cultural writer Mel Gussow to work as a consultant on the Tennessee Williams Festival. $2000.00 University of Central Florida, Orlando, A seminar at UCF and a field trip to Blue Springs features three leading experts on the travels of William Bartram and Andre Michaux in Florida. $1600.00 St Pete Beach Library, St. Petersburg. This grant supports a study guide that will accompany a community-wide reading project. $2000.00 Sarasota Reading Festival, Sarasota. Funding for this year's Sarasota Reading festival supports authors, journalists, and humanities scholars who serve on a panel with the topic "The First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States." $2000.00 40th ACCORD, St. Augustine. This funding supports a program to recognize the Civil Rights history of St. Augustine and commemorate the June 1964 arrest of Dr. Martin Luther King. $2000.00 Anna S. Ippolito, Gainesville. This research project funds an investigation, collection and exhibit of visual representations of Florida that appeared in 19th century newspapers. $2000.00 Kitty Oliver, Fort Lauderdale. Funding supports an expansion of Oliver's oral history collecting to Jamaican and Haitian immigrants. $2000.00 Jan Godown, Tallahassee. This project funds research into the life and achievements of humanist, author, and professor Laura Jepsen whose home "Lichgate on High Road" is preserved as a historic site. $2000.00 Samuel Parish, Wildwood. This project records and documents locations, place names, and old town sites of Sumter County in a 3-map pamphlet. $2000.00 WMNF Radio Florida Public Radio, Tampa. This grant funds a series of 15 public radio programs about lesser known Florida places to visit that are of historical and cultural significance. $10,000.00 Community Design Center, Gainesville. A website, brochure, exhibit and walking tour of the 5th Ave/Pleasant St. neighborhood is funded by this grant. $7,700.00 Florida Cultural Resources, Gainesville. An 8-part radio series, each 30 minutes in length will examine Florida's stories through a focus on a variety of cultural communities. $20,000.00 University of Central Florida, Orlando. Public forums feature a group of Florida artists and the connection of their artwork to the culture of Florida. $13,000.00 St. Lucie County Cultural Affairs Council, Ft. Pierce. This public program brings a playwright, an artist, an actor and scholars together with the public to explore the story of a 7th generation fishing family of Florida. $24,703.00 Valencia Community College, Orlando. This project brings humanities courses to educationally and economically disadvantaged out-of-school adults of the Orlando area. $25,000.00 Bruton Memorial Library, Plant City. 2003 Chautauqua Tour. Modeled on the popular 19th and early 20th century traveling educations shows, this modern-day Chautauqua will include portrayals of men and women who contributed to the civic and cultural life of Florida and the nation. This grant funds the planning and development of an exhibit that will be housed in a traveling museum/educational facility. The exhibit will feature the history and culture of the Southeastern Muscogee Creek people. $2,000.00 Bernice Russell CDC, Punta Gorda. This project will create an archive and permanent exhibit pertaining to the history, culture, and contributions of African Americans in the settlement and development of Charlotte County. $2,000.00 St. Petersburg Bar Foundation, St. Petersburg bar Association, St. Petersburg. Visual and audio artifacts reflecting experiences of African-Americans in the legal profession in Pinellas County will be developed and displayed as part of the exhibit "History, Heritage and Hope." Case law and articles from the civil rights movement that affected the legal system and the African-American community will be included. $2,000.00 Florida Studies Center, Tampa. This grant supports a series of four radio pieces that will air on Florida Public Radio. The series "Keeping Florida's Culture Alive" will feature four aspects of Florida history and culture that people may visit and learn about today. $2,000.00 American Civil Liberties Foundation of Florida, Miami. A panel discussion of eminent veterans from the Civil Rights movement is supported by this grant. The program will explore how the civil rights movement evolved in Florida and how it has been remembered and represented. $2,000.00 St. Augustine-Baracoa, St. Augustine. This project funds a public forum of artists, historians, art collectors, and curators that will explore the historical, aesthetic and cultural dimensions of art from Baracoa, Cuba and St. Augustine, FL. The backdrop is an art exhibit which exemplifies the interconnectedness of the two geographically distant artistic communities. $2,000.00 Lani Friend, Enterprise. This grant funds research and development of a 30-45 minute interactive powerpoint presentation on the history of Enterprise, FL as well as two history brochures for the May 17th Riverfest 2003 event. The materials will place the history of the community in the context of regional and statewide events of the time. $2,000.00 Carol Mahler, Punta Gorda. This project supports the coordinator of the 30th Anniversary Chautauqua tour. Mahler will assist local communities in the development of programs related to the evening Chautauqua events at all nine venues. $2,000.00 Geraldine Seay, Tallahassee. Research, artifact collections, and oral history interviews will provide materials for public programs that focus on the segregated African American recreation area of Money Bayou. $2,000.00
