Major Grants

University of Florida     Alachua
    A film and lecture series engages scholars and experts Caribbean migration who will use the films to focus on the impact of Caribbean migration to Florida.      $12,460
University of West Florida     Escambia
    Audio and audio-visual historical podcasts of 50 Florida towns are proposed by this project.  Towns selected must have a core of standing structures of historical significance and be accessible from one of the state's four interstate highways.     $25,000
University of South Florida - Tampa - Library     Hillsborough
    An introductory video featuring Jose Marti (through actor Chaz Mena) will introduce visitors to the Tampa Cuban Club and Cuban history in Ybor City.  Ten additional 3-4 minute walking tour video segments will also be available as a tour of the Cuban Club.     $24,331
Florida A&M University      Leon
    This series of community dialogues features an exploration of traditional African religions as they are currently experienced by active practioners in Florida.  The project engages scholars and practioners in dialogue and critical analysis.      $17,000
Florida International University     Miami-Dade
    Lecture series and panel discussion will develop awareness of environmental issues affecting the South Florida Coast and examine the community's ethical responsibility.     $6,078
University of Central Florida     Orange
    A public exhibit chronicling Puerto Rican life in Central Florida will be created by the History Center and will travel to several sites.  Public programs will feature scholars and members of the Puerto Rican community.     $22,237
Trail of Florida's Indian Heritage     Pinellas
    Public lecture/discussions are planned for six Trail member sites.  They include archaeological scholars and will be accompanied by handouts and the new heritage tourism brochure.     $22,000

Panama City African-American Cultural Center   Bay   An exhibit of historic photos assembled by community elders is proposed for the new African-American Cultural Center in Panama City.       $2,000
Homosassa Civic Club     Citrus     This project will fund a historic walk and drive brochure that showcases 18 sites and buildings from the rich heritage of Homossassa.      $2,000
The Florida House     District of Columbia     Funds are requested to support a program to accompany an exhibit of Highwaymen paintings for the Florida House.  A scholar and one of the painters will talk about the history of this group of African-american painters.      $2,000
Stage Aurora Theatrical Company     Duval     This grant funds two Chautauqua presentations for an African-American festival in Jacksovnille. It will be held in an underserved area of the city and feature Zora Neale Hurston and Harry T. Moore.     $2,000
             
Apalachicola Bay Chamber of Commerce     Franklin     A 30:00 minute audio guide/podcast about the history and heritage of Apalachicola is proposed for use with new residents and cultural tourists.      $2,000
           
Archbold Biological Station     Highlands     A reading and discussion program and several lectures focus on the Florida environment and  educate residents and visitors about the endangered Florida scrub.      $2,000
                   
University of South Florida - Tampa     Hillsborough     A science fiction symposium features noted science fiction writer Brian Aldiss and a panel of scholars who will pose questions from the perspective of literature, history of science, literary criticism, and gender studies.     $2,000
                   
Coral Gables Museum Corp     Miami-Dade     An oral history project with audio/video interviews will result in a video presentation that captures the history and memories of long.     $2,000
                 
Miami Dade College - North Campus     Miami-Dade     The leading scholar of liberation theology will speak and participate in a panel discussion at a full-day event commemorating the 1963 March on Washington.     $2,000
                   
HAPCO Music Foundation     Orange     A festival featuring African American cultural heritage is funded by this grant.  Programs include Mary McLeod Bethune, a Highwaymen painter, a blues music educator, and a spoken-word poet.      $2,000
                   
Florida Atlantic University     Palm Beach      A free public forum facilitated by a scholar/expert will examine issues in commonalities between the Seminoles of Florida and the Maoris of New Zealand.     $2,000
                   
University of South Florida - St. Petersburg     Pinellas     Two performances featuring the story of Fannie Lou Hamer will be performed for the community in conjunction with a voter registration project.      $2,000
                   
Louise Graham Regeneration Center     Pinellas     An exhibit and public program featuring the story of a little-known civic activist in south St. Petersburg will take place at the African-American museum.     $2,000
                   
Friends of the Library of Saint Johns County, Inc.     Saint Johns     A new Florida heritage book festival will be held in St. Augustine and funding will support free programs about Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings.     $1,950
                   
Saint Lucie County Cultural Affairs Council     Saint Lucie     The annual  Zora Fest will bring the Harlem Renaissance program featuring the Chautauqua characters Hurston, Hughes, and Johnson to kick off the weekend festival.     $2,000
                   
Senior Friendship Centers     Sarasota     Civic reflection discussion on People Helping People.     $1,500
                   
Sarasota Memorial Hospital     Sarasota     A five-part, literature-based, discussion program, facility by a scholar and designed for hospital employees will address critical issues in the medical field today.      $1,500
                   
New College of Florida     Sarasota     Funded under the Florida/Caribbean Initiative, this project will explore historic and contemporary literary relationships between Florida and the Caribbean.  Public presentations will follow.     $2,000
                   
Cinderic Documentaries, Inc.     Volusia     This project explores the historic cooking habits, preparation, and recipes that defined the family and community of rural Volusia County during the Depression-era years.  The condition on the grant requires a scholar of oral history.      $2,000
