Scholars In Schools
FHC brings the humanities to you by making speakers and programs available to your school or district year-round through teacher grants, full-day district-based programs designed and implemented by FHC, and a speakers bureau currently under design.
District Programs FHC is available to design seminars on a variety of topics to serve your school or district’s professional development needs.
FHC:
- Collaborates with school district representatives to establish the program topic
- Develops the program in conjunction with scholars and local community resources
- Creates a program announcement flier, pre-seminar readings and program materials
- Arranges for seminar meeting space in partnership with local cultural institutions
- Facilitates the program.
The School District:
- Distributes the program announcement to teachers
- Registers participants
- Disseminates pre-seminar reading packets when appropriate
- Provides in-service credit to teachers based on district requirements.
Sample topics of seminars include:
- The Harlem Renaissance: Critical Issues in Black Literature and Culture
- Between Columbus and Jamestown: Spanish St. Augustine
- Land of Sunshine, State of Dreams: Florida in the 20th Century.
Costs: FHC charges a fee of $6,500 for a day-long (eight hour) program. The fee covers:
- Scholar and presenter honoraria
- Lunch and refreshments for up to 50 seminar participants and presenters
- Seminar materials and shipping
- Travel and lodging for staff and presenters.
Speakers Bureau for Schools FHC is currently designing a speakers bureau featuring humanities scholars willing to speak to students or teacher groups. Information on topics and reserving a speaker will be available in the summer of 2010.
