Overview
Since its origin in 1971, the FHC Grants Program has awarded more than $8 million in support of public programs throughout the state of Florida. These programs help preserve our state’s rich cultural heritage, promote civic engagement, and foster connections among humanities scholars, cultural organizations, and community groups. Primarily the grant program responds to community interests and initiatives, and is intended to address the concerns of Floridians.
FHC grant awards entertain proposals on a wide variety of subjects. All fall within one of three categories, determined by the amount of funding requested. There are specific guidelines for each of the three types of grants – Mini, Major, and Partnership – and there are special guidelines if the request is for a type of Media grant – interpretive exhibit, digital media (website, CD, or DVD), or radio.
Preference will be given to projects that address important public issues, reach underserved audiences, create resources for communities or cultural institutions, or reach a broad public audience.
Mini Grants: $2000 or less
Project Grant Includes lecture series, book and film discussion programs; small exhibits; oral history projects; maps and brochures, historic tours and other projects that address community needs. Deadlines are January 20, April 20, and October 20. $2000 maximum
Teacher Grant Open only to participants in the FHC sponsored teachers programs. Deadline is October 1. Up to $1000 grants can be used for curriculum or professional development projects.
Civic Reflection Grant Responds to a current FHC initiative, which encourages examination and discussion of our civic life. Applications are accepted at any time for a scholar-led series of discussions. $1500 maximum
Major Grants: Over $2000
Project Grant Includes all of the formats listed above for the Mini Project Grants but on a larger scale. Deadlines are March 20, August 15, and December 30. If the Project Grant includes a type of media such as interpretive exhibit, radio, digital media, (website, CD, or DVD), please use the Special Guidelines required for that type.
Partnership Grants: $3000 each year for a 3 year commitment
Partnership Grant This grant category is intended to fund a series of programs, “typically a lecture series,” that will help to build audiences for the sponsoring organization and for the humanities in Florida.
Information and applications can be found by clicking on the type of grant or, if you have questions, go to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) or contact Grant Director, Susan Lockwood at slockwood@flahum.org.
