St Petersburg Waterfront Parks Centennial - Parks or Commerce: A History of the Parks

The first in a series of panel discussions on the downtown St. Petersburg waterfront parks, a sweep of parkland stretching more than 20 blocks. The program will focus on the history of the waterfront parks, how a decision was made 100 years ago to spend over 2 million dollars to dedicate St. Petersburg's waterfront on Tampa Bay to park rather than to commerce and how the decision for parks over waterfront industry has weathered over the decades. The panel includes noted historian Dr. Gary Mormino of USF-St. Petersburg, Dr. Bruce Stephenson of Rollins College, Will MIchaels, President of St. Petersburg Preservation and Rick Baker, former mayor of St. Petersburg.

The discussion will be preceded by short chautaugua performances of Kathryn Bell Tibbetts and Peter Demens, key historical figures in the development of St. Petersburg.
