Jacob Lawrence: Story Painter and the St. Augustine Interlude

As part of Black History Month, Dr. Carolyn Williams, Professor of History, University of North Florida will lead a discussion of the early years of African American artist Jacob Lawrence. We will trace Lawrence from his first recognition as an artist with a unique talent for executing visual historical narratives to his experiences while stationed as a U.S. Coast Guardsman in St. Augustine during the 1940s and the ensuing struggle for civil rights. The talk will be illustrated by images of Lawrence's work during his formative years.
