Workshop Details

Project Director:
Diane Wakeman
Dates:
June 24 - 29, 2012
Location: University of North Florida
Lead Scholar: Dr. Daniel L Schafer, Professor Emeritus of History, University of North Florida, Jacksonville

Description:

Northeast Florida was the most hotly contested region of Florida during the Civil War.  The city of Jacksonville was captured multiple times by Federal forces during the War, and during the 4th occupation was used as a staging ground for the planned Union invasion of the Florida interior.

The City of Savannah was one of the most important for the Confederacy during the Civil War. We'll explore its antebellum charm—a sharp contrast to the black slave experiences discovered on Sapelo Island.

Dr. Dan Schafer, author of Thunder on the River: The Civil War in Northeast Florida a text for the workshop, leads workshop participants in an exploration of the themes of secession, contested places, occupation, emancipation, invasions, hard war and reconstruction and puts regional history into a national context.  Offering a comprehensive telling of NE Florida's Civil War experience and comparing that to Savannah's, this workshop takes participants from the Missouri Compromise to Reconstruction in the stories of ordinary men and women caught up in extraordinary events.
