Known as Florida’s Last Frontier, The Everglades is the gateway to the famed National Park—the fabled River of Grass.  Enjoy this exotic landscape and discover its history at our upcoming cultural heritage tour of The Everglades.

We’ll explore the area’s diverse ecosystem and its intriguing history of developers and dredgers. Discover how the Seminole and Miccosukee people have endured in this unusual environment for hundreds of years. Hear the stories of fisher folk who persevere against the challenges of government regulation and the pressures of development. We’ll ride the waters and walk the land with artists, writers, scholars, and folks who call The Everglades home.

Cedar Key - April 13-15, 2012

This Gathering is now full, please contact Laurie Berlin at 727-873-2006 to be added to the wait list.

Once a booming port town, then a vibrant fishing village, Cedar Key is now a quaint seaside haven for artists and writers.  This jewel set in the midst of a wildlife refugesk, is a perfect setting for examining the dynamics of change in Florida—as the maritime industry evolves in order to survive, the environmentally demanding tourism industry threatens the very charm that tourists love, and stewards of the environment worry.

During the Gathering in Cedar Key we will kayak through a national wildlife reserve, walk the quaint and storied streets of the town with a local historian, tour the outer islands by boat, examine how the resilient and independent-minded residents responded to the net ban, and tour a clamming facility.  We’ll sample the local seafood and learn about the enchanting nature of the Nature Coast.
