Overview
Since 1971 the Florida Humanities Council has awarded more than $8 million statewide in support of the creation of humanities resources and the presentation of public programs. These programs and resources help preserve Florida's rich cultural heritage, promote civic engagement, and foster connections among humanities scholars, cultural organizations, and community groups.
Grants provide support for humanities projects on a wide variety of topics and formats. All projects are:
- rooted in one or more of the disciplines of the humanities
- enlist the participation of humanities scholars and/or experts in the project’s planning and execution, and
- engage the public in thoughtful and informed activities that explore humanities topics, especially those related to Florida or of interest to Floridians
- free and open to the public and intended for a broad community audience
Grants primarily respond to the needs and interests of local communities, but they may also address special initiatives of the Florida Humanities Council.
Our current initiative, Viva Florida 2013, focuses on collaborating with community and statewide partners to develop resources and public programs that provide Floridians with a deeper understanding of both the historical context and the cultural significance of Florida's 500 year relationship with Spain.
